Alex Whitmore
Alex is the head of our Police Station Department with over 15 years' experience.
Regardless of the offence, Alex works to get to the heart of the issues in the case, to advise clients clearly and act in their best interests. Alex has worked at Sonn Macmillan Walker for over 10 years and is a crucial part of the firm. She provides assistance to clients under legal aid funding but also increasingly on a privately funded basis.
Alex was made Associate Director in 2023 and is one of the firm's leading magistrates' court practitioners.
Alex has extensive experience in defending in every area of criminal law and her practice is focused on attending on clients at the police station to provide early strategic assistance which continues through to representation in court. She specialises in assisting her clients prior to and at the early stages of an investigation, with an aim to prevent further action and any prosecution in court. This approach to pre-charge engagement is focused on getting results, and means her clients have a better opportunity of bringing the investigation to an end as quickly as possible. Alex’s work includes, in appropriate situations, making written representations to the police and Crown Prosecution Service to influence charging decisions. Alex is dedicated and committed to her clients guiding them through what can be extremely difficult circumstances with a thorough and pragmatic approach.
Professional Client Base
Alex is often instructed by executives, medical and teaching professionals, all who have concerns relating to their professional and regulatory bodies to consider alongside the investigation.
Alex regularly represents clients accused of the most serious offences including homicides and has a particular expertise in terrorist investigations. These types of police investigation can involve multiple interviews, on occasions over a number of days, and structured disclosure from officers. The representation of clients in such circumstances can require specific skills and experience anticipating what could remain outstanding and advising clients accordingly.
Expansive Case Experience
Alex represents clients accused of a broad spectrum of offences from serious sexual offences or violence to fraud and money laundering, but gives the same attention and care to the less serious matters which can still hold significant consequences for our clients.
In her magistrates’ court representation and advocacy, Alex is meticulous in her analysis of the evidence in a case and presents the relevant material to the Court in a persuasive, concise and passionate manner. Due to her years and level of experience Alex’s legal knowledge is also at the highest level.
Alex is regularly complimented by clients for her knowledge and expertise but also her kindness, compassion and patience.
Professional societies and memberships
Alex also volunteers at the charity INQUEST, where since April 2023 she has been supporting their specialist casework team to provide independent advice to bereaved families following a death in state care or detention, and in other cases where wider issues of state and corporate accountability are in question.
