Sensitive Historic Sex Case

Rachel Hobba

16 September 2024

Our client was charged with historical sexual offences in relation to their step-granddaughter, and possessing indecent images.

The defendant raised a highly sensitive medical issue he had since birth as part of his defence. A medical expert had to be found to assess the defendant. The prosecution then instructed their own specialist expert. Legal argument was made in respect of how much material in relation to that issue the jury would be exposed to.

The prosecution also relied on former girlfriend to give evidence, her evidence was strongly denied by the defendant. The complainants' grandmother gave evidence for the defence which of caused distress to parties. This was a highly sensitive case given the witnesses called by both the pros and defence and the nature of the evidence.

Our client was convicted in May 2024 after trial at Basildon Crown Court.

Rachel Hobba was the solicitor with conduct of this case. She instructed Briony Molyneux of Crucible Chambers.
