Extradition proceedings to France withdrawn

Katy Smart

30 January 2024

Sonn Macmillan Walker represented our client, SM, in extradition proceedings against France where SM was wanted in relation to trafficking 26kg of heroin through France. In his absence, he had been given a 5 year sentence and extradition proceedings were instigated in 2019.

SM instructed defence lawyers in France. Meanwhile, we negotiated with the French prosecutor and petitioned the Home Office in the UK to compromise the extradition request.

On 22 January 2024, nearly five years after the proceedings in the UK started, and nearly ten years since the offence was committed, SM was discharged following the French Prosecutors acceptance the extradition was no longer valid.

Katy Smart and Poppy Ingall acted on this case. Enrico Braguglia assisted on this matter. Natasha Draycott of 5 St Andrew’s Hill was the instructed barrister.

His family wrote, “your company and you ladies have made this day possible; all the credit is due to your hard work, belief and can-do attitude for the best result.

Wishing you much success going forward and hope you continue to be with the best lawyer’s firm and greatest solicitor’s that you are.

Thank you
